Notes that the value of the euro banknotes in circulation has continued to increase quickly, with a rise of 11,2 % in 2006; notes that this steady increase continued to be mainly accounted for by large denomination notes, in particular EUR 500 banknotes, the number of these in circulation having increased by 13,2 %; reiterates its call to the ECB to examine the reasons for this substantial increase and to analyse the type of transactions carried out with these notes and the breakdown in demand by country, with a view to identifying any attendant risks;

(11) It is necessary to provide that credit institutions and any other establishments involved in the sorting and distribution to the public of notes and coins as a professional activity, including those whose activity consists in exchanging notes or coins, such as bureaux de change, shall be under an obligation to withdraw from circulation euro notes and coins which they know or have sufficient reason to believe to be counterfeit and hand them over to the competent national authorities.
(11) Er moet voor worden gezorgd dat kredietinstellingen alsmede andere instellingen die beroepshalve bankbiljetten en munten verwerken en aan het publiek verstrekken, met inbegrip van instellingen waarvan de activiteit bestaat in het wisselen van bankbiljetten en munten, zoals wisselkantoren, verplicht worden eurobankbiljetten en -munten waarvan zij weten of ten aanzien waarvan zij voldoende redenen hebben om te vermoeden dat deze vals zijn, uit circulatie te nemen en bij de bevoegde nationale autoriteiten in te leveren.
