The new system is being designed to function independently of other existing systems - such as the United States’ global positioning system (GPS) or Russia’s Glonass system - or potential systems.

In addition, under the EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) project, Portugal receives TEN funding for the purposes of the RIMS (Ranging and integrating monitoring stations) for terrestrial observation stations of GPS (Global Positioning System) and GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) satellite constellations.
