Believes that the European Union should take further steps to protect health-care workers from accidents and injury in the workplace where there is scientific or medical evidence of need; welcomes the Commission's intention to put forward by the end of 2008 a proposal for a directive, amending Directive 2000/54/EC on biological agents at work in order to ensure that people working in the health-care sector are protected from infection as a result of needle-stick or other medical sharps injury;
10. is van mening dat de Europese Unie, in het geval dat wetenschappelijk of medisch komt vast te staan dat hier behoefte aan is, verdere maatregelen moet nemen ter bescherming van zorgmedewerkers tegen ongevallen en letsel op de werkvloer; verwelkomt de plannen van de Commissie om voor het einde van 2008 een richtlijn voor te stellen tot wijziging van Richtlijn 2000/54/EG inzake biologische agentia op het werk, teneinde te zorgen dat zorgmedewerkers worden beschermd tegen infecties als gevolg van verwondingen met naalden of andere scherpe medische gereedschappen;

36. Regrets that, despite Parliament's repeated and specific requests, the Commission has yet to propose amending Directive 2000/54/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 September 2000 on the protection of workers from risks related to exposure to biological agents at work with a view to addressing the serious risks to health care workers arising from working with needles and medical sharps; calls on the Commission to expedite the completion of the impact assessment via the Tender (2007/S 139-171103) and calls for an appropriate amendment to be adopted well before the end of the current parliamentary term in line with its above-mentioned resolution of 6 July 2006;

The Resolution highlights the fact that antimicrobial resistance increases morbidity and mortality due to communicable diseases leading not only to a diminution of quality of life but also to additional health and medical care costs, and that action needs to be taken at Community level to reduce the use of antimicrobial agents in veterinary as well as human medicine, and to ban any use of antimicrobial agents for non-therapeutic purposes, and the use of antibiotic resistance genes in GMOs, which may be disseminated in the environment ;

- a worker is found to have an identifiable disease or adverse health effect which is considered by a doctor or occupational health-care professional to be the result of exposure at work to a hazardous chemical agent, or
