Regarding the possibility of capitalising on the experiments termed ELCO (enseignement des langues et cultures d’origine – teaching and study of native languages and cultures), which have been doing a great deal to preserve cultural reference points enabling immigrant children to define their identity, the experiments have been beset by huge difficulties either because the necessary backing has not been forthcoming or the bilateral agreements governing them do not always operate as they should or else because the teaching is provided over and above the standard school curriculum (which in itself is very often too much for the youngest pupils), namely at the end of the day or on Saturdays, thus reducing free time and in some cases causing resentment among the pupils, who view these extra lessons as another burden to be shouldered because they are ‘different’ from their schoolmates and consequently prefer to be ‘the same’ and hence ignore the native language and culture of their parents or grandparents.
5. De zogeheten OTCO-experimenten - onderwijs in de taal en cultuur van oorsprong - hebben er sterk toe bijgedragen dat jonge kinderen van immigranten hun eigen culturele identiteit hebben behouden. Wel werd men bij deze experimenten met enorme problemen geconfronteerd, alleen al door het gebrek aan steun of de afhankelijkheid van bilaterale overeenkomsten die niet altijd optimaal functioneren of omdat dit soort onderwijs meestal bovenop de normale lesuren komt (die op zich al vaak voor de jongste leerlingen te zwaar zijn) met lessen aan het eind van de dag of op zaterdag, waardoor er minder vrije tijd overblijft. Jonge allochtonen willen de extra lessen dan soms niet langer volgen omdat zij het meer als een last beschouwen of omdat zij dan "anders" dan hun medeleerlingen zijn en ze liever "gelijk" willen zijn en de taal en cultuur van hun ouders of grootouders liever zo snel mogelijk willen vergeten.
