Sustainable development was defined in the World Commission on Environment and Development’s 1987 Brundtland report ´Our Common Future` as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’.

A. whereas Sustainable Development, as defined by the 1987 Brundtland Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, means that the needs of the present generation should be met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs; whereas it is necessary, in particular, to safeguard the earth's capacity to support life in all its diversity, respect the limits of the planet's natural resources and promote sustainable production and consumption in order to break the link between economic growth and environmental degradation,

11. Calls on the Commission to take steps to restart the dialogue within OECD in order for environmental guidelines for export credit agencies to be established. Recalls in this context the statement of the G8 Environment Ministers at Trieste ‘to quickly develop and implement common binding environmental guidelines for export credit agencies [...] based on the practices of other internationally recognised, publicly supported multilateral finance agencies such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank. Export credit agencies should also adopt common measures to increase the transparency of their decision-making process, including public access to environmental information, public consultation and consideration of relevant elements of the recommendations of the World Commission on Dams (WCD)’;
11. verzoekt de Commissie maatregelen te nemen om de dialoog binnen de OESO weer op gang te brengen teneinde milieudoelstellingen voor exportkredietinstellingen op te stellen; herinnert in dit verband aan de verklaring van de Milieuministers van de G8 te Trieste om gemeenschappelijke bindende milieurichtsnoeren op te stellen en toe te passen voor exportkredietinstellingen op basis van de praktijk bij andere internationaal erkende, door de overheid gesteunde multilaterale financiële instellingen zoals de Europese Bank voor Wederopbouw en Ontwikkeling en de Internationale Financieringsmaatschappij van de Wereldbank; meent dat exportkredietinstellingen tevens gemeenschappelijke maatregelen moeten treffen om de transparantie van hun besluitvormingsproces te vergroten, waaronder openbare toegang tot milieuinformatie, openbare raadpleging en behandeling van relevante onderdelen van de aanbevelingen van de Wereldcommissie voor Dammen (WCD);
