Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to pay tribute to the staff of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for the exemplary courage and sacrifice with which they have carried out their task and with which they continue to do so. On behalf of the European Parliament, we thank these men and women of the United Nations most sincerely.

By letter of 8 May 2002 the Council consulted Parliament, pursuant to Article 300(3), first subparagraph, of the EC Treaty, on the proposal for a Council decision on the conclusion of the Convention between the European Community and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) concerning aid to refugees in the countries in the Near East for 2002-2005 (COM(2002) 238 – 2002/0104(CNS)).
