The diagnosis will also depend on the overall assessment of intellectual functioning by a skilled diagnostician. Zwakzinnigheid kan voorkomen met of zonder een andere psychische of lichamelijke aandoening. Het is gebruikelijk de graad van zwakzinnigheid te schatten aan de hand van gestandaardiseerde intelligentietests. Deze kunnen worden aangevuld met schaalindelingen die de sociale aanpassing onder gegeven omstandigheden bepalen. Deze metingen geven een benadering van de graad van zwakzinnigheid. De diagnose zal ook afhankelijk zijn van de algehele beoordeling van het verstandelijk functioneren door een ervaren diagnosticus.
