However, it is crucial that the Ukrainian politicians and authorities are committed to bringing about political and economic stabilisation soon.

Welcomes the establishment in 2006 by the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of a focal point for human rights defenders for the purpose of monitoring the human rights situation in all OSCE countries; urges the EU institutions to strengthen their support for human rights defenders by creating a focal point in the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission with a view to improving the follow-up of individual cases and coordination with other international and European organisations;
