Brussels, 17 August 2011 - The European Commission has today approved €100 million for Egypt, to help improve living conditions for the poor in Cairo, create more jobs, and make sustainable energy more widely available.

Notes that Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities continue to face problems with frequent discrimination; calls on the authorities to improve their living conditions, access to social security, health, education and employment services, as well as to provide them with identification documents which is a pre-condition for access to any public services; stresses the urgency of improving the living conditions in Konik camp and adopting and implementing a sustainable strategy for improving conditions within and eventual closure of the camp;

The level of economic welfare in neighbourhoods, the feeling of safety, the condition of public spaces, and the existence of stimulating havens for immigrant children and youngsters and other living conditions are all aspects that affect the image of the people who live in these areas.
Het niveau van de economische welvaart in buurtgemeenschappen, het veiligheidsgevoel, de toestand van publieke ruimten en het bestaan van stimulerende toevluchtsoorden voor immigrantenkinderen en -jongeren en andere levensomstandigheden zijn allemaal aspecten die invloed hebben op het imago van de mensen die in deze wijken wonen.

In the speeches delivered on the occasion, both parties underlined the importance of further strengthening the links and enhancing the relations between the Community and Vietnam and recognized the positive consequences of the ongoing process of economic reform in Vietnam to secure the transition to a market economy and the commitment to continue with this process. They welcomed in this respect the prospects which this innovative agreement opens up, which puts their relations on a contractual basis and creates favourable conditions for development and diversification of trade, cooperation in areas of mutual interest and industry. The Agreement aims at achieving the following principal objectives: - to secure the conditions and to promote the increase and development of two-way trade and investment between the two parties in their mutual interest taking into account their respective economic situations; - to support the sustainable economic development of Vietnam, and the improvement of the living conditions of the poorer sections of the population; - to enhance economic cooperation in the mutual interest, including support to the Government of Vietnam's ongoing efforts to restructure its economy and to move towards a market economy; - to support environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources.
