(34) As lighting applications currently account for approximately 14 % of the energy used in the EU and as modern state of the art lighting systems can save more than 80 % of energy while maintaining lighting conditions in accordance with European standards,(which is an underexploited contribution to enabling the European Union to achieve the EU 2020 targets), the Commission should take appropriate steps towards the adoption of a Lighting Design Directive in order to complement the measures and aims laid down in this Directive.
