An integrated approach, promoting the combination, convergence and cross-fertilisation effect of KETs in different innovation cycles and value chains can deliver promising research results and open the way to new industrial technologies, products, services and novel applications (e.g. in space, transport, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, environment, food, health and energy).

In advanced technology areas, such as ICTs, geographical and sectorial research priorities for cooperation should be inspired by joint inputs from industry, academia and research institutes, for example coming from the Strategic Research Agendas (SRA) of European Technology Platforms, the Information Society dialogues, and from other bilateral and regional contacts.

The Commission will continue its support for forestry research and technological development in the 7th Research Framework Programme[3].

– Increased sustainability and competitiveness, while decreasing environmental impacts, in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture through research into and further development of agricultural production systems, the development of new technologies, equipment, research into new and improved monitoring systems, the development of novel plants and production systems, the improvement of the scientific and technical basis of fisheries management, and a better understanding of the interaction between different systems (agriculture and forestry; fisheries and aquaculture) across a whole ecosystem approach.

Several European Technology Platforms, covering the areas of plant genomics and biotechnology, forestry and the forestry sector , global animal health, farm animal breeding, food, aquaculture and industrial biotechnology, will contribute in setting common research priorities for this theme, in identifying possible future large scale initiatives such as demonstration projects for the production of bulk chemicals from biomass (plant cell wall, biofuels, biopolymers) and help ensure broad participation and integration of all stakeholders.

Calls for an increase in promotion of forest-related research and development work and more recognition of the multifunctional role played by forests, particularly with regard to the sustainable development of biodiversity, by including key forestry research projects in the 7th Framework Programme or in the corresponding programmes in the Member States, and by supporting the forests/wood/paper technology platform which has already been launched;
29. verzoekt om een sterkere bevordering van onderzoek en ontwikkeling op bosbouwgebied en een sterkere erkenning van de multifunctionaliteit van de bossen met name ten aanzien van de duurzame ontwikkeling van de biodiversiteit door centrale onderzoekprojecten van de bosbouwsector op te nemen in het zevende kaderprogramma voor onderzoek van de Europese Unie dan wel in de overeenkomstige programma's van de lidstaten en door het reeds gestarte technologieplatform bos-hout-papier te ondersteunen;

29. verzoekt om een sterkere bevordering van onderzoek en ontwikkeling op bosbouwgebied en een sterkere erkenning van de multifunctionaliteit van de bossen met name ten aanzien van de duurzame ontwikkeling van de biodiversiteit door centrale onderzoekprojecten van de bosbouwsector op te nemen in het zevendekaderprogramma voor onderzoek van de Europese Unie dan wel in de overeenkomstige programma's van de lidstaten en door het reeds gestarte technologieplatform bos-hout-papier te ondersteunen;

Research will focus on: development of the necessary tools for integrated management of coastal zones (ICZM); evaluation of positive and negative externalities under different production systems for agriculture and forestry; development of strategies for sustainable forest management considering regional specificity; strategies/concepts for sustainable management and multipurpose utilisation of forest and agriculture resources; cost-efficiency of new environmental-friendly processes and recycling technologies within the integrated forestry/wood chain; the development of sustainable agriculture which is environmentally friendly.

New and innovative forestry and added-value products: a coherent and ambitious EU forest-based research area (i.e. where there is a free flow of knowledge, technology and researchers) is needed to fuel innovation across the sector.
