Strand 1 includes cultural cooperation actions, grants for literary translation, special actions comprising support for cooperation with third countries, the European Capitals of Culture, as well as four European prizes in the field of culture.

The winners of the Aristeion prize for 1993 were, for the European Literary Prize, Mr Cees Nooteboom (NL) for his novel "Het volgende Verhaal" (De Arbeiderspers) and the European Translation Prize to Mrs Françoise Wuilmart (B) for her translation of Ernst Bloch 's work "Le Principe Espérance" (Gallimard).
