The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) have produced and updated the first ever European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures.
Het Europees Strategieforum voor onderzoeksinfrastructuren (ESFRI) en de Reflectiegroep inzake e-infrastructuur (e-IRG) hebben de eerste Europese routekaart voor onderzoeksinfrastructuren opgesteld en bijgewerkt.

In its final report published early 2002, it recommended that Member States set up a European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures in order to support a coherent and strategy-led approach to policy making on research infrastructure in Europe and to facilitate multilateral initiatives leading to better use and development of research infrastructure.

The European approach to research infrastructures has made remarkable progress in recent years with continuously developing and implementing the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) roadmap for infrastructures, integrating and opening national research facilities and developing e-infrastructures underpinning an open digital ERA.
Dankzij de Europese benadering van onderzoeksinfrastructuren is er de afgelopen jaren opmerkelijke vooruitgang geboekt met het voortdurend ontwikkelen en uitvoeren van de routekaart van het Europees Strategieforum voor onderzoeksinfrastructuren (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures - ESFRI), het integreren en openstellen van nationale onderzoeksfaciliteiten en het ontwikkelen van e-infrastructuren ter bevordering en openstelling van een digitale EOR.

The aim is to facilitate and support the preparation, implementation, long-term sustainability and efficient operation of the research infrastructures identified by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and of other world-class research infrastructures, which will help Europe to respond to grand challenges in science, industry and society.
Het oogmerk is om de voorbereiding, implementatie, langetermijnhoudbaarheid en efficiënte werking van de door het Europees Strategieforum voor onderzoekinfrastructuren (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures - ESFRI) aangewezen onderzoeksinfrastructuren en andere onderzoeksinfrastructuren van wereldklasse te faciliteren en te ondersteunen, om Europa te helpen de grote uitdagingen op wetenschappelijk, industrieel en maatschappelijk gebied aan te gaan.

This need has been expressed on numerous occasions both at political level by the Member States and the Community institutions, and by the various actors within the European research community such as undertakings, research centres and universities and, in particular, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI).

Support for research infrastructures in this programme should, where relevant, take into account existing or future mechanisms for a European approach to research infrastructures in Europe (e.g. National Research and Education Networks - NRENS and European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures), as well as the scientific advice of existing European and international organisations (e.g. European Science Foundation - ESF).
Bij steunverlening aan onderzoeksinfrastructuur uit hoofde van dit programma moet in voorkomend geval rekening worden gehouden met bestaande of toekomstige mechanismen voor een Europese benadering van onderzoeksinfrastructuur in Europa (bijvoorbeeld nationale onderzoek- en onderwijsnetwerken (NRENS) en het Europees strategieforum voor onderzoeksinfrastructuur), en met het wetenschappelijk advies van bestaande Europese en internationale organisaties (bv. de Europese stichting voor wetenschappen - ESF).
