[37] The European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies is an independent, pluralist and multidisciplinary body which has been set up by the European Commission to give advice on ethical aspects of science and new technologies in connection with the preparation and implementation of Community legislation or policies (Communication to the Commission of 11 December 1997 on the establishment of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (SEC(97)2404)).

On 2 February 2010, Member of the European Parliament Valdemar Tomaševski sent a letter to the President of the European Parliament requesting that the independence of his office of Member of the European Parliament be defended, as it was jeopardised by the admonishment issued on 22 January 2010 by the Lithuanian Chief Official Ethics Commission, a body of the Lithuanian Parliament.

An ethical review will also be implemented systematically by the Commission for proposals dealing with ethically sensitive issues or where ethical aspects have not been adequately addressed.

Without prejudice to the competence of Member States as regards ethical issues, the Commission shall, on its own initiative or at the request of the European Parliament or the Council, consult any committee it has created with a view to obtaining its advice on the ethical implications of biotechnology, such as the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies, on ethical issues of a general nature.

Onverminderd de bevoegdheid van de lidstaten ten aanzien van ethische kwesties, raadpleegt de Commissie op eigen initiatief of op verzoek van het Europees Parlement of de Raad, ten aanzien van ethische kwesties van algemene aard comités die zij heeft opgericht voor advies over de ethische implicaties van biotechnologie, zoals de Europese Groep ethiek van de exacte wetenschappen en de nieuwe technologieën.
