As announced in the Digital Agenda for Europe [24], the Commission is supporting the widespread deployment of telemedicine services and of cross-border exchange of electronic medical record information and ePrescriptions, whilst ensuring the respect of EU rules on protection of personal data.

The Commission intends to support a common approach to patient identifiers and electronic health record architecture through standardisation and will support the exchange of good practices on possible additional functionalities, such as medical emergency data and secure access to personal health information..
