The EGF proved to be a useful tool in mitigating the results of the economic crisis and preventing social disasters at local level while providing support for the training and retraining of workers with a view to reintegrating them into employment in difficult labour conditions.

In the interests of preventing the recurrence of maritime disasters such as the sinking of the oil tanker Erika, the European Economic and Social Committee (ESC) adopted an opinion at its plenary session in October on three legislative proposals addressing a number of major aspects of maritime safety relating to the transport of petroleum products and the prevention of accidental pollution which may occur as a result.
