This exposure has involved nearly all participants in extensive and wide ranging dialogue, and has contributed to awareness raising, comparison of national values and cultures, attitude changes and increased commitment to support the social and economic reform process in their own countries and in their own working environment.

8. Calls on the Council to ensure that the Member States endeavour, in cooperation with media organisations, to take initiatives and launch campaigns seeking in particular to inform and raise the awareness of young people about the consequences of regimes which pursue racist policies and that, in general, those campaigns reflect the diversity of a multi-cultural society, inter alia so as to familiarise European citizens with foreign cultures and their positive contribution to Europe's economy and culture;
8. verzoekt de Raad ervoor te zorgen dat de lidstaten zich erop toeleggen, in samenwerking met de mediaorganisaties, om initiatieven te nemen en campagnes op te zetten die in het bijzonder gericht zijn op het informeren en bewustmaken van de jongeren met betrekking tot de gevolgen van regimes die een racistisch beleid voeren, en het meer in het algemeen nadenken over de diversiteit van een multiculturele samenleving, een en ander om de Europese burgers bekend te maken met de cultuur van de buitenlanders en hun positieve bijdrage tot de Europese economie en cultuur;

Rather than putting our own culture into a multi-cultural context, I am in favour of developing a sound, realistic awareness of our own culture, taking both the positive and the negative aspects into account, which can lead to improved relations with each other and acceptance of the cultural differences on both sides.
In plaats van de relativering van de eigen cultuur kan een goede, realistische bewustwording van de eigen cultuur, zowel de positieve als de negatieve kanten ervan, leiden tot een betere omgang met elkaar en acceptatie van de cultuurverschillen aan beide kanten.
