TRADUCTIONS EN CONTEXTE

Whilst purse seines and pole and line gears rarely catch sharks, the surface longliners have a high catch rate at around 68 percent, compared to the 30 percent of the stated target catch of swordfish and tunas. This shark catch is around 31,000 t per annum, mostly consisting of blue shark ( Prionace glauca ) and shortfin mako ( Isurus oxyrinchus ), with blue shark alone representing 75% of all shark catches.

The shark component is dominated by blue shark ( Prionace glauca ), which represents up to 88% of total shark catches. The other species of importance is the shortfin mako ( Isurus oxyrinchus ), making up approximately 9% of total shark catches.

4. Notes that some shark species (particularly blue shark and shortfin mako, which represent 99 % of total catches) listed in Annex 1 to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea are main species targeted by the EU surface long-line fleet and that the Standing Committee on Research and Statistics (SCRS) of ICCAT considers that they are exploited within safe biological limits; calls on the Commission to report to Parliament on the actions taken by the Joint Committee in response to the science-based study to be carried out as described in Article 4, paragraph 6 of the Annex to the Protocol, in order to have guarantees that this fishery is exploited in a sustainable and responsible way; stresses that Parliament should also be informed about the data obtained as regards shark stocks;

(2c) Blue shark (Priconace glauca) and shortfin mako (Isuras oxyrinchus), classified by the IUCN as "near-threatened" and "vulnerable" respectively, are currently the predominant species captured by the European fleet, with blue shark accounting for circa 70 % of the total of reported shark landings.

6. Calls on the Commission to put before the European Parliament and the Council within the next six months a proposal for amending Regulation (EC) No 1185/2003 in line with the majority of scientific analyses of shark fin to carcass ratios for Atlantic sharks, including the blue shark (Prionacea glauca), which conclude that a 5% fin to dressed weight (approximately 2.0% of live weight) ratio is an appropriate upper limit for mixed shark fisheries;
6. verzoekt de Commissie om het Europees Parlement en de Raad binnen zes maanden een voorstel tot wijziging van Verordening (EG) nr. 1185/2003 voor te leggen dat aansluit bij de meerderheid van de wetenschappelijke analyses van de verhouding haaienvinnen tot karkassen voor Atlantische haaien, waaronder de blauwe haai (Prionace glauca ), die concluderen dat een verhouding van 5% vinnen tot schoongemaakt gewicht (ongeveer 2,0% levend gewicht) een geschikte bovengrens is voor de gemengde haaienvisserij;

D. conscious, however, of evidence from the US and Canadian fishing fleets that when the fins of blue sharks (Prionace glauca ) are cut without meat or vertebrae left attached, then the ratio of fin weight to dressed weight is under 4%, and that the failure to trim excess flesh results in fins imported into Hong Kong from Europe commanding a lower average price per kilogram than those from the USA,
D. zich evenwel bewust van het feit dat uit gegevens van de visserijvloten van de VS en Canada blijkt dat als de vinnen van blauwe haaien (Prionace glauca ) worden afgesneden zonder aangehecht vlees of wervels, het gewichtpercentage dat de vinnen uitmaken van het schoongemaakt gewicht onder de 4% blijft en dat het niet wegsnijden van overtollig vlees ertoe leidt dat voor vinnen die in Hong Kong uit Europa worden ingevoerd een lagere prijs per kilogram wordt betaald dan voor vinnen uit de VS,
