Against the background of the recent announcement by the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Franz Fischler, of the second package of measures for reforming the CAP, the following speakers will address the issue of the Common Agricultural Policy - present and future: Robert Savy, President of Limousin Regional Council (FR-PES) and rapporteur for the CoR's opinion on a long-term policy perspective for sustainable agriculture; Hans-Benno Wichert, President of the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA); Heinz Vierenklee, Chief Executive of the Mittlere Elbe Farmers' Union; and Bernd Voss of the European Economic and Social Committee.

The Commission, and more specifically the Commissioner responsible for agriculture, are very much in favour of actions in support of young farmers.

Commissioner FISCHLER emphasised that the matter had been the subject of Commission proposals in the past and that, in the context of Agenda 2000, significant and varied support measures had been implemented, in particular for promoting the establishment of young farmers.
