With all due respect to those who say, " We must do this, or the Hill Times, the National Post and other media will say unflattering things about us," at this stage in my career and life, surely we must do the right thing for the continued independence and autonomy of this chamber rather than being stampeded by the concerns of this particular flavour of the month, which may be the basis of attack by the people and the media, who, if they did not have this aspect to attack, would find another area of this chamber to attack.
Avec tout le respect que je dois à ceux qui disent: «Nous devons faire ceci ou cela pour éviter d'être critiqués par le Hill Times, le National Post ou un autre média», je crois qu'à ce stade de ma carrière, je dois faire ce que je crois juste pour défendre l'indépendance et l'autonomie du Sénat plutôt que de me laisser influencer par des considérations pouvant constituer la base d'une attaque des médias. De toute façon, si les médias n'avaient pas cet élément à attaquer, ils en trouveraient bien un autre.
