The research of Dr. John Weaver of the Wildlife Conservation Society demonstrates what Nahanni park officials have long realized — that the existing boundaries are not spread out far enough to protect a carnivore like the grizzly.

At this point, Mr. Chairman, I would like to make it clear that Parks Canada's overall interest and primary concern in the Nahanni region is the protection of the ecological integrity of the entire Nahanni watershed, or what the Deh Cho call Naha Dehe.

For all of these reasons, before we launch off into expanding the Nahanni National Park, we need to seriously consider the two issues that I have raised, that of park management and administration, so that the federal government and Parks Canada can develop and have a unique northern approach to management of parks, and, second, that there be a full resource assessment, so that we know definitively what is in that land.

Yet, throughout most of the multi-year park establishment process, it appeared things were on track for a park boundary that would protect the area's natural values while respecting third-party mineral rights, very similar to what happened in the Nahanni National Park expansion.
