Following meetings in Berlin yesterday with the Prime Minister of the German Democratic Republic Mr Lothar De Maiziere and Mr Gerhard Pohl, GDR Economics Minister, Commission Vice President Sir Leon Brittan said that he had received the following assurances: 1) the GDR would be prepared to deal with competition policy as if the Treaty were already in force; 2) the GDR Government would ensure non-discrimination against non-German companies; 3) specific complaints about mergers or acquisitions which appeared anti- competitive would be looked at carefully in the light of point (1); 4) officials of the the Competition Directorate General of the Commission would keep in close touch with officials of the GDR.
