Welcomes the efforts made by Syrian opposition representatives to create a united front of opposition forces, as well as the recently issued ’National Pact’, ’Common Political Vision for the Transition in Syria’, and conclusions and recommendations of ’The Day After project: Supporting a Democratic Transition in Syria’; encourages the Syrian opposition to continue on this path with the aim of creating a credible alternative to the regime and urges the VP/HR and EU Member States to make every effort to unify the Syrian opposition; welcomes the strong support shown by Turkey; Lebanon and Jordan for the Syrian population; urges the VP/HR to make every effort to start discussions with the authorities of Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, the Arab League and the Syrian opposition on preparing the peaceful transition for the post-Assad Syria;

Welcomes and encourages the ongoing efforts by the Syrian opposition both within and outside the country to establish a united platform, to continue to engage with the international community, in particular the Arab League, and to work on a shared vision for the future of Syria and the transition to a democratic system; continues to support the Syrian opposition including the Syrian National Council; stresses the importance of the Syrian opposition and the Free Syrian Army committing themselves to human rights and fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, maintaining a clear commitment to a peaceful and inclusive approach; supports the Council’s conclusions of 23 January 2012 and urges the EU and its Member States to swiftly implement them as well as to find new ways of strengthening their non-military assistance to Syrian opposition forces; urges the Commission to increase its support and assistance to Syrian opposition and civil society;

Strongly supports the call by the Turkish Prime Minister for President al-Assad to step down immediately; welcomes the condemnation by the Turkish government of the systematic violence by the Syrian government, and welcomes the imposition by Turkey of sanctions on the Syrian regime; commends Turkeys strong support for the Syrian population, including by accepting refugees along the Turkish-Syrian border; supports calls for the establishment of buffer zones along the Turkish-Syrian border to take in Syrian refugees and to allow those persecuted by the regime to find refuge and protection and allowing the Syrian opposition to organise and strategise, as well as the creation of humanitarian corridors by the international community, including the Arab League, linking Homs to Turkey and to the Mediterranean, and Daraa to Jordan to enable an escape route for people seeking to flee the violence targeting citizens;
