The European Commission has today welcomed the Aviation Platform's support for "Vision 2050", a long-term strategy for research and innovation in aviation" which is being developed by a group of European top-level representatives of the European aeronautics and aviation industry. They are working on a proposal for an ambitious research and innovation strategy to put Europe at the forefront of competitive, clean, safe and secure aviation by 2050.

As aviation is the most regulated form of transport, I welcome the commitment by the industry, as agreed in Lisbon in May, to implement the voluntary passenger service commitment.

- (EN) Monsieur le Président, je voudrais saluer chaleureusement le rapport sur la taxation du carburant d'aviation car il s'attaque de front au fait que l'aviation représente la source d'émissions de gaz à effet de serre qui connaît l'augmentation la plus rapide et le fait que, loin de décourager ces émissions, l'actuelle exonération de la taxation du carburant pour l'aviation encourage et stimule artificiellement le secteur de l'aviation et les dommages environnementaux qu'elle cause.

AVIATION SAFETY: COUNCIL CONCLUSIONS "The Council, having asked the Commission at its meeting on 11 March 1996 to study further the questions related to aviation safety, taking into account its previous Resolutions of 24 October 1994 and 29 June 1995; having proposed at this meeting that the Commission establish a High Level Group to examine the situation and to draw up an action programme, asking the Commission to report to the next Council meeting: - stresses the importance of safety in all modes of transport; - confirms the need for the Community to take a more active stand in the field of aviation safety; - notes with satisfaction the communication by the Commission and appreciates the work done by the High Level Group whose report is attached to that communication; - welcomes the Aviation Safety Improvement Strategy as defined by the High Level Group; - instructs the Permanent Representatives Committee to proceed urgently with further work on this matter".
SECURITE AERIENNE : CONCLUSIONS DU CONSEIL "Le Conseil, ayant demandé à la Commission, lors de sa session du 11 mars 1996, d'approfondir l'étude des problèmes relatifs à la sécurité aérienne, compte tenu de ses résolutions précédentes du 24 octobre 1994 et du 29 juin 1995 ; ayant proposé, lors de cette session, que la Commission institue un groupe à haut niveau pour examiner la situation et élaborer un programme d'action, en demandant à la Commission de faire rapport lors de la prochaine session du Conseil : -souligne l'importance de la sécurité dans tous les modes de transport ; -confirme qu'il est nécessaire que la Communauté joue un rôle plus actif dans le domaine de la sécurité aérienne ; -prend acte avec satisfaction de la communication de la Commission et se félicite du travail accompli par le groupe à haut niveau, dont le rapport est joint à cette communication ; -se félicite de la stratégie d'amélioration de la sécurité aérienne définie par le groupe à haut niveau ; -demande au Comité des Représentants permanents de poursuivre d'urgence les travaux sur cette question".
