The draft directive incorporates these amendments into EU law, while adapting the STCW provisions on watchkeeping in order to bring them into line with EU rules on working time for seafarers.

This Directive aims to update Directive 95/21/EC in order to take account of recent changes made to MARPOL (Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) and SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) and the Convention on standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers (STCW 1978).
Cette directive vise à réactualiser la directive 95/21/CE afin de tenir compte des modifications récentes apportées aux conventions internationales MARPOL (Convention sur la prévention de la pollution provoquée par les navires) et SOLAS (Convention internationale pour la sauvegarde de la vie humaine en mer) et à la convention STCW 1978 concernant les normes de formation des gens de mer, de délivrance des brevets et de veille.
