–was informed by the Commission of the progress of negotiations on veterinary and plant-health equivalence agreements, in particular with the United States; –held an exchange of views, also on the basis of a report from the Permanent Representatives Committee, on the progress of the negotiations with the United States, focused mainly on the exchange of letters between Mr FISCHLER and Mr GLICKMAN, as the detailed text of the agreement was still being drafted at technical level; –took note of the positions adopted in this respect by the various Member States and of the detailed examination in this connection carried out by the Chief Veterinary Officers; –particularly emphasized the importance attributed to recognition by the United States of the regionalization principle with regard to health status, and expressed its concern at the situation in the field of trade in poultrymeat; –took note of the initiatives that the Commission intended to take in order to find a satisfactory solution to these two issues; –agreed to follow developments in the situation closely and to return to this matter at a later stage.
