In accordance with Article 17(7) of Regulation (EC) No 110/2008, France and several French producers of rum submitted objections to the registration of ‘Ron de Guatemala’ as a geographical indication on the grounds that the specifications of the product and the definition of rum under Guatemalan law, which the technical file refers to, would not be in line with the definition of rum under category 1 of Annex II to that Regulation and with the other requirements of that Regulation, mainly as regards the prohibition to use flavourings, colorants and sweeteners for the production of rum, the rules on the raw materials to be used, on the quality of the water to be added and on the indication of the ageing in the description, presentation or labelling of the product.
Conformément à l’article 17, paragraphe 7, du règlement (CE) no 110/2008, la France et plusieurs producteurs français de rhum se sont déclarés opposés à l’enregistrement du «Ron de Guatemala» en tant qu’indication géographique, au motif que les spécifications du produit et la définition du rhum au sens de la législation guatémaltèque, à laquelle la fiche technique fait référence, ne seraient pas conformes à la définition du rhum figurant dans la catégorie 1 de l’annexe II dudit règlement et à d’autres exigences dudit règlement, essentiellement en ce qui concerne l’interdiction d’utiliser des arômes, des colorants et des édulcorants dans l’élaboration du rhum, les règles concernant les matières premières à utiliser, la qualité de l’eau à ajouter et l’indication du vieillissement dans la description, la présentation ou l’étiquetage du produit.
