I think – as do many others – that there are a number of areas in which work will continue until the end of the year, that the pressure should be kept on in terms of the process and that we cannot indeed rule out a time when a number of safeguard clauses will need to be put in place, although I would urge both Romania and Bulgaria to do everything in their power to avoid this.
Je pense - comme beaucoup d’autres - qu’il y a une série de domaines dans lesquels le travail se poursuivra jusqu’à la fin de l’année, qu’il faut maintenir la pression en ce qui concerne le processus et que nous ne pouvons en effet pas écarter la possibilité d’une période pendant laquelle une série de clauses de sauvegarde devront être mises en place, même si j’encourage vivement la Roumanie et la Bulgarie à faire tout ce qui est en leur pouvoir pour éviter cela.

I would like to stress once again that we share the responsibility of making Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accessions successful, and I would therefore urge the Heads of Government to consider this enlargement as one of their guiding principles in their decision-making, particularly in both debates tomorrow.
Je souhaiterais souligner une fois encore qu’il nous incombe en partie de mener à bien les adhésions de la Roumaine et de la Bulgarie. J’incite donc les chefs de gouvernement à considérer cet élargissement comme l’un de leurs principes directeurs lorsqu’ils prendront des décisions, notamment au cours des deux débats prévus demain.
