Turkish society is in a state of flux, it is in turmoil even, and I think that, when we discuss Turkey, we must be keenly aware that any reform in that country deeply affects relations between citizens, the establishment, Turkish history and democracy.

Finally, the protection of human rights must remain a priority for the Turkish authorities, since there are still restrictions on fundamental freedoms, and the enjoyment of these freedoms by Turkish citizens, even if guaranteed by law, still lags behind European standards. These efforts must then be pursued.

Even though we subscribe to the numerous criticisms in the report relating to the country’s lack of preparedness for accession, the report focuses on Turkey’s progression towards accession, and we shall therefore oppose it, because, like a great number of our fellow citizens, we are against Turkish membership of the Union.
