– (PT) I voted in favour of the joint motion for a resolution on the situation in Tunisia and wish to express my total solidarity with the Tunisian people, who, motivated by legitimate aspirations of democracy and improved social conditions and access to work, have led their country to an historic political watershed; in this context it salutes the courage and determination shown by them during the demonstrations, offers its condolences to the families of the victims and shows its solidarity with the injured.

Welcomes the trend in favour of more freedom of expression and association and media plurality as well as the clear wish of the interim government to enable plurality of political parties and independent non-governmental organisations; considers that these elements are going in the right direction and calls therefore on the Commission and Council to reflect these recent developments in the EU-Tunisia Action Plan 2011-2016 and the negotiations towards an advanced status for Tunisia;
