It is in light of this objective that domain names requested by any undertaking having its registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the EU, any organisation established within the EU, without prejudice to the application of national law, and any natural person resident within the EU must be registered in the .eu Top Level Domain.

On the basis of Regulation (EC) No 733/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 April 2002 on the implementation of the .eu Top Level Domain (OJ 2002 L 113, p. 1) and of Commission Regulation (EC) No 874/2004 of 28 April 2004 laying down public policy rules concerning the implementation and functions of the .eu Top Level Domain and the principles governing registration (OJ 2004 L 162, p. 40).

Europe’s Top Level Domain “.eu” will therefore become part of the worldwide family of internet Top Level Domains and has been created in close coordination with the non-profit organisation Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which manages the domain name system worldwide.

Having regard to Regulation (EC) No 733/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 April 2002 on the implementation of the .eu Top Level Domain (1), and in particular Article 5(1) thereof,

The new ".eu" domain name will complement the existing family of so-called "country-code" or national Top Level Domains in the EU (such as .uk, .fr, .es) as well as the "generic" Top Level Domains such as '.com', '.org' and '.info'.

Two years after its launch, the “.eu” top-level domain (TLD) is an undeniable success. The report indicates that “.eu” domain names are being actively used and that they are meeting real demand among European citizens, industry and other organisations. According to EURid, more than 2.8 million .eu domains have been set up on the Internet, making “.eu” Europe’s fourth most popular TLD and the ninth most popular worldwide, after such major top-level names as “.com”, “.net” and “.info”.
