A lot has changed since then, but Robert Schuman’s and Jean Monnet’s basic axiom to the effect that a lasting peace is created by weaving peoples and nations together in mutually enriching dependence is still valid. Security is created through cooperation pure and simple, as well as through integration and enlargement.
