Initiatives to be highlighted in this context include recent proposals updating the guidelines and financing rules for trans-European networks, modifications to the Eurovignette system and proposals in the area of taxation in relation to the treatment of parents and subsidiaries and of mergers.

[5] In the recent proposal for the modernisation of the Fourth (78/660/EEC) and Seventh Council Directives (83/349/EEC) adopted on 28 May 2002, COM(2002)259, the Commission has proposed amendments to those Directives to promote the inclusion, in the annual review, of non-financial information relevant to an understanding of the performance of the business and its position at the year end - i.e. the annual review should not be restricted to the financial aspects of performance or year end position.
