Article 1 A specific research and technological development programme for the European Economic Community in the field of marine science and technology (MAST), as defined in Annex I, is hereby adopted for a period of three years, starting on 28 June 1989.

The European Community runs various activities in the different sectors concerned as part of its numerous research cooperation programmes: Brite/Euram (industrial and material technologies); Mast (marine sciences and technology); and research programmes in the fields of the environment, fisheries and energy, etc. 1 The press file for the conference can be had from office BREY 6/41. - 2 - The conference will provide an opportunity for taking stock of the state of progress and initial results of a number of projects currently under way: projects to develop composite materials for offshore platforms and to apply computer assisted design methods to shipbuilding (Brite/Euram programme); projects to study the natural variability of and changes in benthic ecosystems (fauna and flora connected with the seabed) (Mast programme); "Eros 2000" project to study pollution at river mouths; study of eutrophication (pollution due to algae) of coastal waters (Environment programme); development of systems to optimize shipping routes (pilot projects in the field of energy); activities of the Joint Research Centre on the study of the sea by remote sensing, etc.
