The Office now has three Directorates, respectively for Policy, Legislation and Legal Affairs (Directorate A), Investigations and Operations (Directorate B) and Intelligence, Operational Strategy and Information Technology (Directorate C).

The key role of the Agency should be to establish a technical and operational strategy for implementation of integrated border management at Union level; to oversee the effective functioning of border control at the external borders; to provide increased technical and operational assistance to Member States through joint operations and rapid border interventions; to ensure the practical execution of measures in a situation requiring urgent action at the external borders; to provide technical and operational assistance in the support of search and rescue operations for persons in distress at sea; and to organise, coordinate and conduct return operations and return interventions.
L'Agence devrait avoir pour rôle essentiel d'établir une stratégie technique et opérationnelle pour la mise en œuvre de la gestion intégrée des frontières au niveau de l'Union; de superviser le fonctionnement effectif du contrôle aux frontières extérieures; d'apporter une assistance technique et opérationnelle accrue aux États membres au moyen d'opérations conjointes et d'interventions rapides aux frontières; d'assurer l'exécution pratique de mesures dans une situation exigeant une action urgente aux frontières extérieures; d'apporter une assistance technique et opérationnelle en vue de soutenir les opérations de recherche et de sauvetage de personnes en détresse en mer; et d'organiser, de coordonner et de mener des opérations de retour et des interventions en matière de retour.

2. The Agency shall, by decision of the management board based on a proposal of the executive director, establish a technical and operational strategy for European integrated border management.
