To achieve these objectives the programme concentrates on the following : - studies and construction works in the motorway Athens-Katerini, which constitutes the main road connection with the northern part of the country; - construction works on the motorway Athens-Korinthos which constitutes the main road link with the southern part of the country and is one of the busiest roads. - small scale projects designed to improve road safety, general studies concerning the area where the projects are carried out and necessary research (i.e. traffic, environmental) to back up the before-mentioned studies. - organization of the programme (i.e. equipment, monitoring system, training, expert support to facilitate the implementation of the programme).

On the initiative of Mrs Scrivener, Member of the Commission with responsibility for customs union and indirect taxation, and Mrs Papandreou, Member of the Commission with responsibility for employment, industrial relations and social affairs, and in close consultation with the workers concerned, the Commission of the European Communities has launched a study aimed at examining the redeployment in the twelve Member States of the above-mentioned occupations to intra-Community customs operations. The objectives of the study are: a) to evaluate the quantitative aspects of the problem (number of jobs lost, costs involved, etc.); b) to analyse the occupational profile of the persons concerned, with a view to assessing the type of operation involved and the cost of the redeployment; c) to put forward suitable proposals.
