A. having regard to the seriousness of the current situation in Venezuela; whereas since 12 February 2014 peaceful marches led by students have taken place across Venezuela and have ended in deadly violence, with at least 13 deaths and more than 70 people being injured and hundreds detained; whereas the students’ demands relate to the failure of President Maduro’s government to solve the problems of high inflation, crime and shortages of some staples, as well as to increasing levels of corruption and the intimidation of the media and the democratic opposition; whereas the government has blamed the shortages on ‘saboteurs’ and ’profit-hungry corrupt businessmen’; whereas Venezuela is the country with the largest energy reserves in Latin America;

50. Condemns the severe repression carried out by the regime of Belarusian President Lukashenko against members of the opposition, journalists and representatives of civil society following the presidential elections of 19 December 2010 and calls for the immediate release of all those who have been detained and for them to be cleared of all charges; welcomes the decision of the Council of 31 January 2011 to impose a visa ban and to freeze financial assets of 157 selected Belarusian officials; takes the position that sanctions against the Belarusian government officials should remain in force until all political prisoners are released from Belarusian prisons; welcomes the outcome of the International Conference of Donors on ‘Solidarity with Belarus’ of 2 February 2011, as part of which the EU has pledged EUR 17.3 million for actions to support civil society, in particular students and the independent media; takes the view that the Commission should enhance people-to-people contacts between the EU and Belarus; encourages those Member States which have not yet done so to take unilateral steps to facilitate the issuance and to reduce the price of short-term visas, in particular Schengen visas, since they are most relevant to the wider society, students and other young people; stresses the importance of ensuring that Belarus does not become isolated, in particular from the existing regional frameworks;
50. condamne la répression sévère menée par le régime du Président biélorusse Loukachenko à l'encontre des membres de l'opposition, des journalistes et des représentants de la société civile à la suite des élections présidentielles du 19 décembre 2010 et demande la libération immédiate de tous les détenus et leur disculpation de toute accusation; se félicite de la décision prise par le Conseil le 31 janvier 2011 d'imposer une interdiction de visa et de geler les avoirs financiers de 157 dignitaires biélorusses précis; est d'avis que les sanctions à l'encontre des dignitaires du gouvernement biélorusse devraient rester en vigueur jusqu'à la libération de tous les prisonniers politiques incarcérés dans les prisons biélorusses; se réjouit du résultat de la Conférence internationale des donateurs «Solidarité avec la Biélorussie» du 2 février 2011, lors de laquelle l'Union européenne s'est engagée à verser 17,3 millions d'euros pour des actions de soutien à la société civile, et plus particulièrement aux étudiants et aux médias indépendants; estime que la Commission devrait améliorer les contacts interpersonnels entre l'Union et la Biélorussie; encourage les États membres qui ne l'ont pas encore fait à prendre des mesures unilatérales visant à faciliter la délivrance et réduire le coût des visas de court séjour, en particulier des visas Schengen, compte tenu de leur importance cruciale pour l'ensemble de la société, les étudiants et la jeunesse en général; souligne l'importance de veiller à ce que la Biélorussie ne soit pas isolée, notamment des cadres régionaux existants;

L. whereas dozens of students have been detained over the last few months following protests against the replacement of scores of professors and other actions intended to further limit freedom of expression on university campuses, including the banning of a number of student publications and suspensions and expulsions of students from their places of higher education,

[Text] Question No. 128 Mr. Paul Forseth: With regard to the activities of the Canadian embassy in Tunis and Tunisian students who disappeared after their arrival in Canada: (a) were the applicants each individually interviewed; (b) were their claims of being students certified by checking with the intended Canadian universities that they were paid-up registered students; (c) were the bank accounts of the applicants checked to see if they had sufficient money to travel; (d) did the embassy or the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade do anything to change procedures and discipline staff; (e) was there concern about fraud from any employee; (f) what specifically has been done to prevent a repeat of this situation; and (g) why, when discovered in Canada, were all students not detained and deported?
