Child trafficking[lv] must be tackled in the light of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights that stresses the child's best interests as a primary consideration in all actions relating to children.[lvi] The Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989 (CRC)[lvii] as the most important international child rights instrument includes provisions on child trafficking.[lviii] The Convention applies to every child under the age of 18 years, an approach which is shared by the Commission.
