– (RO) The European Union has speeded up the process of opening up to the states of the South Caucasus ever since its expansion towards Eastern Europe, at a time when this region has become extremely important from a strategic, stability and security perspective.

I am well aware of how complex the situation is in the South Caucasus, and thus understand that it is far from easy to make progress in terms of democratic standards at a time when the threat of extremist attacks is ever-present.

– (DE) Mr President, Commissioner, the South Caucasus is a region in crisis on Europe’s doorstep, and, ever since the Soviet Union disintegrated and the Nagorno Karabakh conflict broke out, the European Union has had a strategic rather than merely humanitarian interest in keeping it economically and politically stable.
- (DE) Monsieur le Président, Monsieur le Commissaire, le Caucase du Sud est une région en crise aux portes de l’Europe et, depuis la désintégration de l’Union soviétique et l’éclatement du conflit au Nagornyï-Karabakh, l’Union européenne a montré un intérêt stratégique plutôt que purement humanitaire concernant le maintien de sa stabilité économique et politique.
