The President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, said ahead of the meeting:" In a fast-evolving world, the EU and South Africa can make a difference by working together: I look forward to sharing and discussing with our South African partners our respective strategies to accelerate and facilitate the creation of employment and growth. The recent European Council has taken important decisions on this which I will present.

We also committed to work together ahead of and during the UNFCCC 17th Conference of the Parties and the 7th Conference of the Parties, serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP17/CMP7) that will take place in Durban, South Africa, from 28 November to 9 December 2011.
