The importance of the banana industry The existence of these national import arrangements has given rise to considerable differences between Member States regarding consumption, prices, production costs, quality and marketing of bananas. These indicators usually operate to the disadvantage of Community producers1 given their conditions of production (small and mountainous island regions, small farms and high social charges).
