Calls on the Commission to consider bringing the case of the continued widespread use of forced labour in Burma to the attention of the World Trade Organisation, which pledged in its Singapore Ministerial Declaration of December 1996 to renew its "commitment to the observance of internationally recognised core labour standards';
14. invite la Commission à envisager de saisir l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC) du problème du recours généralisé et permanent au travail forcé en Birmanie, cette organisation s'étant engagée dans sa déclaration ministérielle de Singapour de décembre 1996 à renouveler son attachement au respect des normes de travail fondamentales, internationalement reconnues;

As described above, international discussions have come a long way - from the basic recognition of social development as one of the pillars of sustainable development and the confirmation of the social dimension of globalisation in the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration for Social Development, through the WTO 1996 Singapore Ministerial Declaration, to the adoption in 1998 of the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.
