– (FR) Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, at the death of Louis XIV, King of France, the French people showered their devotion on his successor, Louis XV. We too wish to shower our devotion on Mr Trichet and will be voting for him, although there are no more objective reasons for supporting him than there were for feeling devotion in advance for Louis XV. The main reason behind our enthusiasm for Mr Trichet is the lethargy of his predecessor.
- Monsieur le Président, mes chers collègues, quand le roi de France, Louis XIV, est mort, son successeur, Louis XV, fut accompagné d’un torrent d’amour de la part des Français. Nous nous joignons à ce torrent d’amour et nous voterons pour M. Trichet, bien qu’il n’y ait pas plus de raisons objectives de le soutenir qu’il n’y en avait pour aimer à l’avance le roi Louis XV. La lassitude à l’égard de son prédécesseur sera la raison principale de notre enthousiasme pour M. Trichet.
