In effet, the Council underlined the unity and the firmness of the EC Member States with respect to fisheries relations with Canada" (... The Community cannot accept that the poor state of the cod stock in divisions 2J3KL be presented as a consequence of fishing activities by Community fleets within NAFO. According to the conclusions of Community scientists, Community fisheries can only have a minor impact on the state of that stock when compared with that of other parties, considering that Community catches represent hardly more than 10% of total catches of this stock. The Council urges the Government of Canada to accept the request made by the Commission to summon immediately an extraordinary meeting of the NAFO Scientific Council in order to evaluate the state of the stock concerned(...)".

Le Conseil insiste auprès du gouvernement du Canada pour qu'il accepte la demande faite par la Commission de convoquer immédiatement une réunion extraordinaire du Conseil scientifique de l'OPANO, en vue de procéder à une évaluation de l'état du stock en cause (...)".

According to a team of EC scientists who analysed the Canadian report last March, there is nothing to indicate that EC catches have caused cod stock problems inside the Canadian 200-mile limit, as Canada claims.
