– (DE) Mr President, it is surely also the task of the European something-or-other Union to do something to counteract the spread of illnesses closely connected with the way we eat, but I do believe that what the European Union needs to do in the face of Europeans’ pronounced scepticism about genetic engineering and the ruling recently handed down by the WTO is to push for studies of the medium and long-term damage to health done by genetically modified food, in order that the public may be, at last, rather less in the dark about it.
- (DE) Monsieur le Président, il incombe certainement aussi à l’Union européenne - ou quelque chose du genre - d’agir pour contrecarrer l’expansion des maladies étroitement liées à notre alimentation. Néanmoins, je suis convaincu que face au scepticisme prononcé des Européens concernant le génie génétique et la décision récemment rendue par l’OMC, l’UE doit surtout insister pour que soient menées des études sur les dégâts causés à moyen et long terme sur la santé par les aliments génétiquement modifiés, afin que la population soit enfin un peu moins dans le flou à cet égard.
