Concerning the information published today in a French newspaper article on the action taken by the Commission in respect of abandoned Romanian children, the Commission would like to add the following details: In response to a European Parliament resolution in May and various appeals on the subject of the conditions in which abandoned Romanian children were being lodged, the Commission, which has no office in Romania, asked the NGOs to make enquiries. At the end of August it sent a team to Romania. The Prime Minister, Mr Roman, wrote to President Delors on 3 September and the latter replied on 26 September, following examination of the information brought back by the team and consultation with the NGOs
