I will not repeat what Mr Reynders has said about the stability and convergence programme, the efforts made by the Commission and the work done by the task force. I will just mention the idea – which I find useful – of a European Semester, which will put the budgetary analysis of each of our countries into perspective while preserving their sovereignty, and will provide a snapshot – another European radar screen – of the countries’ general economic policy guidelines.
Je ne répéterai pas ce qu’a dit Didier Reynders sur le programme de stabilité et de convergence, les efforts fournis par la Commission, les travaux de la task force, notamment cette idée, que je trouve utile, de semestre européen, qui permettra de mettre en perspective l’analyse budgétaire de chacun des pays, tout en préservant leur souveraineté et d’avoir une photographie, un écran radar européen là aussi, sur les orientations générales des pays en matière de politique économique.

– (DE) Mr President, Mr Reynders, Commissioner Barnier, we have already carried out a great deal of work – as Mr Gauzès said: 21 trialogues and numerous meetings between the rapporteurs and shadow rapporteurs from the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Committee on Legal Affairs.
– (DE) Monsieur le Président, Monsieur Reynders, Monsieur le Commissaire Barnier, nous avons déjà accompli une grande partie du travail - comme l’a dit M. Gauzès: 21 trilogues et de nombreuses réunions entre les rapporteurs et les rapporteurs fictifs de la commission des affaires économiques et monétaires et de la commission des affaires juridiques.

I would like to thank and congratulate him, as well as all the coordinators and shadow rapporteurs, and of course, as Mr Reynders has just said, the Belgian Presidency and the whole team, for the very important and very tenacious work that has been accomplished over these last few weeks, and before it, by the other Presidencies.
Je voudrais le remercier et le féliciter, comme l’ensemble des coordinateurs et des rapporteurs fictifs, et naturellement – Didier Reynders vient de s’exprimer – la Présidence belge et toute son équipe, pour le travail très important, très tenace qui a été accompli tout au long de ces dernières semaines, avant lui, par les autres Présidences.

Last week, speaking with the former chairman of Ecofin, Mr Reynders, we said that the clear lesson we have learned from this process is that the next time we change currency we must not do it on the first of January.
