Takes note of the progress made in the field of the development of gender-specific statistics, but emphasises that greater efforts should be devoted to this, as statistics are a necessary tool for establishing monitoring indicators; draws the attention of the authorities responsible for programming to the need to develop statistics, both at national level and at regional and local level, in order to better illustrate the respective situation of women and men, and to ensure that these statistics cover all aspects of equal opportunities in each programme and that they are available to programme managers at every level; emphasises that statistics are also a key factor in establishing the proportion of women and men in each socio-economic bracket;

Citizenship of the Union can only have an appeal on both men and women by increasing political participation and strengthening the protection of rights of both sexes. Therefore information campaigns focused on women are necessary. Political parties in the member states should furthermore be encouraged to have a fair representation of women on their electoral lists for local and European elections in order to come to a real gender mainstreamed Citizenship of the Union. In its next review the Commission should provide gender specific statistical information, as now already is available on non-nationals taking part in municipal elections.
La citoyenneté de l'Union ne peut présenter un attrait tant pour les hommes que pour les femmes que si elle accroît la participation politique et renforce la protection des droits des deux sexes. Des campagnes d'information centrées sur les femmes sont donc nécessaires. Il convient en outre d'encourager les partis politiques dans les États membres à établir une représentation équitable des femmes sur leurs listes électorales pour les élections locales et européennes afin de parvenir à une véritable intégration de la dimension du genre dans la citoyenneté de l'Union. Lors de la prochaine révision, la Commission devra fournir des informations statistiques spécifiques quant au genre, comme il en existe déjà en ce qui concerne les ressortissants de pays tiers qui participent aux élections municipales.
