I cannot spend time in the company of veterans and reflect on the medals they proudly display - occasionally along with physical marks of encounters, to which individuals like myself can only relate with a feeling of awe - without coming to understand, with feelings of deep respect and admiration, that the democracy in which I live has been paid for by them and by others with whom I also had the privilege to spend some time as we stood quietly in the graveyards across the face of Europe and the Far East.
Je ne peux pas côtoyer des anciens combattants et admirer les décorations qu'ils arborent fièrement - et parfois des marques physiques de combat qui n'inspirent que le plus grand respect à des gens comme moi - sans me rendre compte, avec autant de respect et d'admiration, que la démocratie dans laquelle nous vivons a été payée par eux et par d'autres avec lesquels j'ai eu le privilège de passer quelque temps lorsque nous nous sommes recueillis sur leur tombe dans les cimetières de l'Europe et de l'Extrême-Orient.
