As per Division 28 of the Food and Drug Regulations, a novel food is either a substance, including a micro-organism, that does not have a history of safe use as a food; a food that has been manufactured, prepared, preserved or packaged by a process that has not been previously applied to that food and that causes that food to undergo a major change; or a food that is derived from a plant, animal or micro-organism that has been genetically modified.
Conformément au titre 289 du Règlement sur les aliments et drogues, un aliment nouveau est une substance, y compris un micro-organisme, qui ne présente pas d'antécédent d'innocuité comme aliment; un aliment qui a été fabriqué, préparé, conservé ou emballé au moyen d'un procédé qui n'a pas été appliqué auparavant à l'aliment, fait subir à l'aliment un changement majeur; ou un aliment dérivé d'un végétal, d'un animal ou d'un micro-organisme qui a été modifié génétiquement.
